Chiropractor and Co-founder of the Animal Rehab Klinik
BSc.Chiro, M.Chiro, GradDip (ABM), CertIV OHS, TAA

Hi, I’m Matt one of the Co-founders of the Animal Rehab Klinik.

I graduated in 2008 from Macquarie University and I’ve worked in human practice for 8 years and I have always liked animals and had a variety of pets throughout my life growing up.

In 2010 I started Sutherland Chiropractic, which outgrew its premises and evolved into Shire Healthcare which had various treatment modalities available to treat humans in a holistic and natural manner.

After going to my friend’s farm and meeting a dog called Missy who lost a front leg in an accident, I became interested in the idea of how similar animals are to humans in their need for rehab and treatment. I also began to wonder why it wasn’t readily available for animals in the same way. After that, it became my mission to become educated and create a place where all furry family members can have the same health options as their humans. I saw that there weren’t many services like this that existed, and only a handful of educated and experienced people in the world were thinking about animals in this way.

With that in mind, and with the help of Dr Rhys, the Animal Rehab Klinik was born – a place for animals to get the same quality of care as their humans get. Simple as that.

Shortly after opening the Animal Rehab Klinik I had a new addition to my family – Sunday, a Tri-Pawed Rottweiler was brought to the Klinik for some advice on how to manage her amputated paw. I couldn’t resist her cuteness, so I adopted her knowing that I could provide her with the life that she needed to keep her healthy. You can read more about Sunday on her blog here.

Outside of work, I enjoy Surfing, playing music, being in nature and spending time with my friends and family.

Dr Rhys Donovan

Osteopath and Co-founder of the Animal Rehab Klinik
BAppSc (Osteopathy), MA Osteopathy, GradDip (ABM)

Hi, I’m Rhys – the other co-founder of The Animal Rehab Klinik.

I’d love to tell you a bit about myself, so you can get to know me a little better and hopefully entrust me with looking after your pet!

I began my professional career as an osteopath in 2010 after completing a 5-year degree in osteopathy at the University of Western Sydney.

During my studies, I had gotten to know some lecturers who were also qualified in equine rehab & treatment. I didn’t even realise that this profession existed. I was immediately fascinated with how they applied their hands-on skills and treated animals who had no way of verbally communicating what was wrong with them. I immediately knew that one day I too wanted to learn how to do this.

Fast forwarding the clock several years, I found myself with some spare time in the human practice that I ran and knew this was the opportunity that I needed to do some further study and set about enrolling in the newly formed Animal Biomechanical Medicine (ABM) course.

Immediately I was captivated by the content in the course – re-visiting osteopathic principles and treatment which I’d done for so long for humans, but learning how to apply this thought process to these creatures with 4 legs (and sometimes 3 legs!) Not to mention learning new chiropractic approaches. It was like a new lease of life on my career – I had to think on my feet a lot more than I’d needed to in recent years which reinvigorated my desire to learn and develop as a practitioner.

In 2018 I was appointed as a Director of our professional association – the Animal Biomechanical Professionals of Australia (ABPA). I’m excited to take on this new responsibility and lead the way the future of our industry!

Abbie Lovell

Animal Rehab Nurse
BSc (hons) Sport Therapy, Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing

Hi, I’m Abbie. I started my Rehabilitation carer working with humans after graduating with a BSc (hons) Sport Therapy degree in the UK in 2004. Upon completion of my degree I worked as a Sports Therapist at a local professional football (aka soccer) club where I provided pitch side care and injury rehabilitation and prevention techniques to the junior academy. Alongside this, I also worked at a University as a biomechanics and rehabilitation technician where I was heavily involved in research and the university rehabilitation clinic. Some of the research I was involved with focussed around gait analysis using 3D motion capture and force platform analysis, as well as looking into injury prevention techniques.

I have always had a passion for animals from an early age and a move to Australia with my family brought about the opportunity to embark on a new career path and I studied to become a qualified Vet Nurse.

Whilst studying I was lucky enough to merge my 2 passions and qualifications together and became a Rehabilitation Nurse at a vet clinic. In 2020 I joined the ARK team and the rest is history…!

At home I have 3 cocker spaniels with 2 being geriatric! I am also a foster carer for Cocker Spaniel Rescue Australia, and I have a bit of a soft spot for the golden oldies!

One of the reasons I love working in animal rehabilitation is to give every animal the the best quality of life possible.

Lauren Crofts

Receptionist

I’m Lauren, one of the receptionist’s here at the Animal Rehab Klinik.

I have always been a lover of animals and always knew I wanted to grow up to work with them. I’m currently completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Animal and Veterinary Science, and Zoology. I am working towards one day being able to work as one of the practitioner’s here at the Animal Rehab Klinik to pursue my passion in helping animals.

I have two dogs, Emmy and Sox, a cockatiel and two green tree frogs. Outside of work I enjoy playing soccer with my team mates, snowboarding during winter, going to the gym, and going for bushwalks.
